I don't know if anybody else has come across this problem but I think I solved mine.
A few weeks back I replaced the submersible pump down in my basement. The washing machine and the house's drain tiles all drain into the sump pit. The pump discharges straight up into a 3 foot 1 1/2" pvc pipe through a check valve and then up through 1 1/2" galvanized steel pipe which elbows at the basement ceiling and then continues till it hits the main drain and then out to the city sewer.
I solved a different problem by rodding out my main drain line but now the drain pipe off the sump pump was hammering after the pump would complete it's cycle. I tried padding the pipe with rags between the elbow and the basement ceiling to muffle the noise. This helped a bit but the noise was still loud. I decided to put in a air camber above the check valve by placing a pvc tee and then elbowing up a 2 foot 1 1/2" piece of pvc. The total cost was less than $10 and it seems to have worked . I filled up the sump pit 3 times and each time the pump finished it's cycle I didn't hear any hammering from the pipes.
hammer time ?!? ......not a chance
