I am looking at getting a metal roof and have read advice here, but forget most of it. What is the minimum gauge you should use? Should you ever consider exposed screws( if thats what you call it)? Any other advise would be appreciated. Already have an estimate of $4000 on a 1150 square foot house.

"Metal Roof" is a pretty broad term...
The quote sounds fairly cheap
An Architectural Metal Panel (standing seam) 26 or even better 24 gauge will cost in the $8 to $10 a square foot range.
your quote sounds like it is for a Corrigated or "R-Panel" roof.
Exposed fasteners...NO

Min is usually 26 ga for architectural panels on a wood deck 24 ga for structural on short span purlins. Some of these 22 ga. See the mfr for exact specs.
