will it get a lot of wear? do you have kids/pets? do you eat/drink while sitting on it?

a tapestry would be a good choice. they're a heavy fabric that wears well with a tight weave that won't pull easily, and the multi-colored patterns hide spots well.

i'd avoid a thin, flimsy cotton chintz.

if you've got kids or pets, avoid solid colors that will show stains. if you are wanting a solid color, at least go with a tone-on-tone pattern, like a corduroy or jacquard or damask type weave.
