Kenmore 80 Gas dryer does not heat. Read all the info on the boards. I plan on removing the burner assy and handing it to the local shop to diagnose whether it's igniter or solenoids or something else.

I have already taken off the back panel, removed the top, but I cannot access the assembly. I think I have to take off the front panel, but I am afraid I will somehow not properly get it back on (affecting the drum action???). There is the inner back panel (which seperates the heater box from the other internals), but that seems too involved.

What is the best way to access and remove the burner assembly?

Thanks,

Hello helpmespock. Welcome to my Gas Appliances topic and the Do-It-Yourself Web Site.

Dryer disassembly is not all that difficult but one has to be handy with small common household tools and have some mechanical skills. Not for everyone to attempt or anyone to doubt they can do the job.

A wise man does consider the possibilities well before attempting a task which he/she has doubts they can do well. If any exist, have the machine repaired professionally like one would their car, etc. I do not fix my car as a diy project, am highly skilled in mechanics and will tackle any appliance. But not my vehicle. that's best left to the pros.

As it pertains to the dryer, the front does come off. Ways vary and I cannot say specifically how on that model. Usually screws in the door frame or only two at the very bottom of the front panel, etc. May be 2 clips under top front panel between front panel and top or top slides back or forwards to release from front or two screws inside between front and side panels.

Always look carefully when removing parts. Look how they are currently installed, placed or connected, etc. Reinstall exactly as they are now. A reversal of disassembly to reassemble.

Thanks. Yes, the front panel is held on by two screws. The issue I'm concerned about is when I remove them, the drum is no longer supported. It is form fitted between the front panel and the back panel. Is there any special consideration for drum alignment, belt placement, when I put it all back together?

Hi helpmespock

When front panel is removed, front part of drum will just drop down. Belt will remain on. Inside front of drum is supported by a bracket attached to front panel. You'll see how it is when you remove front panel that has the door.

To put the front panel back on, open door. Place front panel in place and with hand inside door, lift drum onto plastic bracket and place panel in place. Drum fits onto top portion of support bracket inside of panel and lower portion of drum slips into groove with felt strip in support bracket.

Drum alignment will be correct when installed back onto bracket and belt placement on drum will be back in it's correct place if belt is placed on the wear marks on the drum that will be there already.
