I am still gathering information before I start tiling a shower stall. Another question I have is it ok to use drywall joint compound on a joint between drywall and Hardie Backer that is beyond the tiled and wet area? I had to go slightly beyond the tile area to split the materials on a stud. I was figuring on using the backer board tape and treat it as a regular drywall joint. Is this acceptable? Thanks for your help.

As long as your outside the wet area this will be fine. Use a fast setting joint compound such as Durabond and skim coat the exposed backer with it as well. This will not reemulsify as would joint compound from a bucket.
