Hi everyone,
We have old carpet throughout our house with hardwood floors underneath. I'd like to redo the hardwood, but we're hesitant to loose the comfort of carpet.
We haven't had much luck finding large area rugs in a solid color that we like, and the salesman at the rug store suggested that we have a carpet store apply an edging, much like what's on the small carpet samples, around a piece of carpet the size that we want. However, every carpet store that I ask about this acts like I'm crazy.
Is anyone familiar with or done this before? Is it very expensive to have this done if it's possible?
Thanks very much in advance for your advice.

I bind area rugs all the time. They will apply it with a rather custom sewing machine. Well, a carpet binder. What is your location? Maybe we can point you in the right direction.

I wonder why any other store would think this is crazy?
Maybe they are totally uneducated, or believe traditional rugs are the ONLY way to go.
Binding is great, and is useful to make a rug a custom size to fit a space exactly.

Many years ago I installed wall to wall carpet and at times manually bound area rugs. You can do the same. Get binding tape that matches your carpet, a large needle, strong thread and latex glue.
Flip over the carpet, wrong side up and stitch the binding all around. Note: the loop stitch can be up to 3/4 inch appart - less is better. Fold the binding over and latex glue to the back of the carpet. You may have to make 45 degree cuts in each corner before gluing down.
May appear old fashioned but certainly works.
Hope this helps.
