Hi-hope everyone is well today and could possibly give me some insights. This is a Carrier Central Air and Heat Pump unit. About 5 years old
The most immediate a/c problem is- usually the fan in the air handler inside the house is set on "auto" and a tissue will "be sucked up" against the intake area. But today I discovered that COLD air is falling out of the intake area (a tissue will not "suck up" to it)This does not happen when i set the the fan to "on".
I just checked the unit and my house inside temp is 78, however I have it set for 81 and the outside temp is 80! The compressor has been running all afternoon.I haven't got a clue what's happening and before i call some one and they tell me to replace things, I'd like to have an idea what to expect.
Are there anythings I can check before I call?
Plus-this is a BIG plus- previously the unit would run fine but intermittantly the air handler working fine, but the compressor would not turn on, so the handler would would just blow and blow and not cool. I messed with the thremostat (turned the fan off and turned the cooling off. waiting a few minutes turned the fan back to auto and pressed cool again. In a few minutes I hear that distinctive click and the fan comes on and the compressor starts up.) I called a repairman and of course because it was working he couldn't find a problem-checked the delay, relay, had enough freon etc. He left without a diagonsis, but with $50. Could my problems be related? Thank you for any help

Sounds like the blower motor may of tripped off on it's own limit. or reply..
if this happens next time.. turn off the power, and feel the blower motor.. if it's really hot to the touch, it over heated and tripped out on limit.

If the inside of the house is 78º and you have it set at 81º it is probably in heat mode and the fan may be on a lower speed.
Have you changed the filter? and made sure no vents are covered? If it's in cooling mode and the airflow is nill check for ice at the indoor unit where the copper lines go into the duct above the airhandler.

turns out the contacts were fused "on" so the compresser kept running and made my coils freeze
contacts were replaced, seems to be okay now
Thanks for all help

Glad you found the problem. It's a common one too.
