I need to patch a 2 1/2 X 3 ft section of carpet. I have done small patches before. Since this is a larger patch, should I use double sided carpet tape or adhesive (or both) for the job?

If it is over cushion, use a pressure sensative seam tape. If there is no pad use adhesive.

I would use seam tape whenever possible (hot melt)
The larger the area the easier to work. I would rather work on a 3ft x 3ft piece than a 3 in by 3 in piece, most of the time. The tricky part usually is getting the iron out. Sometimes i opt to straightedge it right out to a wall (if its close by) so i can work the iron better and send it out at the wall.
I know your doing more seaming this way but i would rather have 6 feet of extra invisible seam than 1 foot of a mess!
