Is there an instrument for measuring noise at registers (or other points in an HVAC system)? Is there a range of normally-expected noise levels? I have one register that is much louder than the others (a new home). I am going to check it out, but it got me to thinking about measuring noise at varoius locations in the system.

Thanks

I own a db meter but only use it in commercial applications. Normally in residential if it's loud enough to be annoying to the customer it is a problem that needs to be addressed.

Have the GC get the installing company to meet with you and I'm sure they can remidy the problem.

New home could be cheap registers. Might try a better grade register for the one that makes the noise.

slowillie,

One thing you could try is to remove the grill to see what difference it makes.
The noise could be from the ductwork.

What kind of noise it it making?? Too much air flow? Noise from the furnace or A/C?

If it's the air flow, it maybe too close to the furnace, and may have to close down the damper.
