I'm building an addition and want to add a stove or fireplace to keep warm when the electricity goes out and to give some ambience.
The current trend seems to be toward direct-vent equipment.
The location will be directly adjacent to an outside wall, so outside air is readily available.

The framing for the fireplace and the gas connection will be done by contractors. But does it make sense for me to hook up the vent/intake pipe and gas supply myself? Ebay offers what looks like nice equipment at good prices.

With all honesty and fairness in mind, to you and answering the question, only you can decide if you have the skills, tools and knowledge to do the work. Do it correctly, safely and to all codes.

Best advice, allow the pros to do it. Peace of mind. Knowing all work meets codes and is done with safety in mind. No gas leaks will exists and all fumes will be vented correctly. Peace of mind.
