I have a cathedral ceiling in the livingroom with three very tall walls. The tallest has a fireplace, the second has a coat closet door in the middle and the third is actually the area over the entrance to the diningroom. I need some ideas to decorate these walls with wall hangings as opposed to painting to bring the walls down. This is a masculine area but, I am not totally opposed to a little bit of "pretty". Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
ScottJ

Solution: Scott what I would suggest for your very tall walls would be to put long drapes on the wall to the diningroom and the closet door from ceiling or lower down to the floor. I would put a long vertical mirror about 3 inches from top to bottom the diameter of the wall above the fireplace which if light or candles where put on the mantel it would illuminate the entire room.

i don't know how you can achieve what you're wanting any other way than painting. simply hanging stuff on the walls will not do it.

if you do not like your high ceilings, and want to visually lower them & make the room seem cozier, do this:

paint the ceiling the same color as the walls, or a darker shade of the wall color. the first way will eliminate the contrast line in between the walls & ceiling & therefore your eye won't be drawn up to it. the second way makes the ceiling seem lower & creates a "cap" that makes the room seem cozier.

also, simply choose a paint for the room that is not light, but rather mid-tone. you could go dark for maximum coziness, but going at least mid-tone will bring everything in.

the way you decorate can also help. you want to take the focus off the tall walls by emphasizing the furnishings. such as using an area to draw focus to the floor, or by installing a chair rail or wallpaper border about 3 1/2 feet up from the floor and painting a darker color beneath it.

also, try to use larger scale pieces in the room. they'll seem to "fit' better proportionally. small pieces will look small and make the room look larger.

are you renting or something, that you can't paint?

Oh yes, I own the home and I live here. Its just the tall walls seem to cry out for a nail and something hung on it instead of paint. I had considered the mirror over the mantle idea and will probably follow up with that. That leaves 2 1/2 tall walls for something. Thanks for your advice.

If your decorating style is fairly contemporary you could do some very cool things with very wide stripes or zigzags going horizontally across those walls in either a complementary color to the paint or an accent color that matches your furnishings.

For example, imagine beige walls with a wide maroon and narrow black horizontal stripe painted over one wall, then down a few feet and the across the next wall, with a black leather sofa and a couple of big maroon pillows to lounge about in front of the TV. You get the idea.
