We bought a beautiful stone sheldrake last year, the living room has a stone fireplace, slate mantle, hardword floors that have been refinished in a beautiful wood color. The walls are painted green. (not a dark dark green but a deep green). Our sofa and love seat are in mint condition but I have grown tired of the look - white with thin and thike stripes (includes gold, thin green .that matches the walls, and deep cardinal with a very formal look) I am looking to get away from formal living room and make it somewhat relaxing. We have a baby grand in the room - an area rug trimmed in deep red or burgandy, tans and touches of green in it. My 1 questions:
1. I am thinking of reupholstering the sofas in a camel/carmel color - what do you think?

Annette's the gal with the eye for color. I liked your sofa. It picked up the green in walls and you had extra colors added in and these were complimented by the area rug. I feel like if you add a 'plain' color that you will lose drama. Can you play up some of the colors in the sofa in accessories in room to make it come alive and be part of the room? You have gold, green, red, and, of course, white in the couch. You have red, tan, and green in the rug. Perhaps through accessories you can unite the color scheme. What color do you want to dominate? Gold, green, red, or tan? I can't wait to hear what Annette reports.

Thanks for the thoughts -- my problem is the sofa is just to formal for me. I am looking to "loosen" the room a bit. I thought the tan/camel colors might accomplish this. When I look at the sofa and when we bought we had the no kids and the formal living room. Now twin toddlers, we sold the crystal lamps and the beveled glass end table/coffee tables. Now thinking changing the upholster would give the room a more cozy, sit down and listen to the piano playing feel... please give insight if you can??

first off, at the risk of appearing stupid, i have to ask: what's a sheldrake??? :o is it like a cabin?

another thing i need to know more about is the area rug: what kind of pattern is this area rug? is it really busy, like an oriental type or more casual, color blocked or what? and what color is the stone of the fireplace? gray or beige?

my preliminary thoughts are these: if you don't want to paint, and the rug is staying, then your choices for sofa colors are limited to those colors. we can eliminate the burgundy, unless you're up for Christmas all year long! i like the camel idea, but not if the stone fireplace is gray. could you go a darker version of the green walls, for a monochromatic scheme?

let me know about the rug & stone & we'll go from there...... ;)
