Our AC refuses to turn off and was blowing very cold. We thought it was the old White-Rodgers thermostat since adjusting the temp didn't work, nor did ac/off switch, so we replaced it with a RiteTemp? digital. We made sure they were both 24v.
My husband installed the new one and while the thermostat tells the correct temperature, it will not shut off. Even in the off position. I can't tell you how old the ac unit is, since we were just renting the place, but we have bought the place now and inherited all it's problems. It's not a new unit, by any stretch of the imagination. Any ideas on what it could be?

More than likely it's a bad contactor, located in the outside unit. Please be careful and turn off all power to the unit before opening access panel. If uncomfortable working around this area call a pro. How long has it been since this unit's been serviced?

well, I couldn't tell you that either. It is very hard getting any information out of our old landlord/neighbor. All he will tell us is the unit used to be on another place they owned and he installed it here a year before we moved in, and that was 2 years ago. My husband recently cleaned the coils, replaced the fan, and the capacitor and that was about a month ago.
Four days ago, we had a cold snap here in Florida. We turned the air off and had the windows open. We did that for two days then turned the air back on. It was getting really cold so we tried to raise the temp on the thermostat and noticed that nothing happened and the unit wouldn't shut off.
This is strictly an ac unit outside. The thermostat used to control a furnace we had but our propane guy found carbon monoxide and severe rusting inside and removed it, capping off the gas line. So now the thermostat only runs the AC unit.

i agree, probably contactor. remove wires from tstat, does it stop? if so, tstat is bad, if not contactor is

You dont say does the fan inside and the fan outside run. You said new tstat did it run with the wire off?? If so pull R wire at unit and see it it turns off if so short in tstat wires

yes, the air conditioner works as it always has, both fans. And, if the thermostat setting is set higher than the house temp when you try to turn the a/c on at the breaker, it wont come on at all, unless you lower the setting to be below the current house temp.
Could someone tell me where the contacts are in relation to the capacitor? Are they in that same area?

What is right here  you just need R- Y--and G on the tstat to run just AC. The contactor is in the outdoor unit look and see where the big power lines go to . Turn power off when you go in there.
