Got new fan blades today. My husband has put them on the motor exactly the way the other ones were on the old motor. When we start the AC, the air is blowing down instead of up. The blades are on the same way. Is the motor wrong? I have read about reversing the motor on fasco.com, but have no idea about doing it. The new motor only had three wires, black, brown and purple. He hooked it to the capacitor exactly the same way. He had to disconnect another black wire to unhook the old fan, but he hooked that back up to the new fan exactly the same. Did we buy the wrong motor? I took our old motor to JohnStone Supply and this is what they gave us, so now what do we do? Please help, we are at our wits end.

It should be possible to reverse your capacitor start motor. Post the Johstone model number and maybe you can be helped with the hookup. There are no standard color codes for motors so the wire colors are mostly of no help. Sometimes there is a diagram for a clockwise and counterclockwise hookup printed somewhere on the motor itself. Mostly I find them on the small plate you remove to hookup the wires or get at the capacitor.

a GE model 5KCP39BG HP 1/6 HZ 60 V 208-230 CL-B

The one that was taken off was a Emerson model K55HZJME-2952 HP 1/8
V208/230 HZ 50/60 CL-A.

Thanks for any help you can give me. Is it possible to take it back to JohnStone and get a motor that runs the opposite way? Or do they all run one way and you have to reverse them yourself? We are willing to rewire it with help of course, :)

Thanks in advance!
Stephanie

The numbers you gave indicate a small permanent split capacitor motor. You can't change the rotation of these motors only because the manufacturer doesn't bring out all the leads necessary to do so. That's not unusual on small, cheap motors. I assume that the motor is used on the condensor fan on your A/C unit outside. You should be able to remove the fan blades, flip them over, and reinstall them. That will reverse the air flow without reversing the rotation of the motor. If you can't get that to work for you, check with Graingers, if you have them in your area. There is a good line of motors in there for HVAC applications. Some of the small motors simular to yours WILL run either CCW or CW by changing two wires.

You said you took the old motor to Johnstone supply with you .Id take it back they should have the right motor for it. Also make sure you get the right RPM on it with it running the right way.

I just talked to them on the phone and they will not take the motor back due to a home owner buying it rather than a contractor. He told me to flip the blade and it will blow the other way. Is that true? This is so irritating. They gave me this motor and now they do not want to take it back even if they gave the wrong one, ugh. Flipping the blade, hope that will work.

Does it sound right?

Flip the fan over & see if it will work for you.

Flipping the blade will NOT reverse the airflow. You need to either replace the motor with one that turns the opposite direction, OR replace the fan blade with one with a reversed pitch.
Sorry :(

Andrew's right. If they will not exchange the motor buy a blade .

That just dont sound like Johnstone supply. Check the rpm for sure. If you took the old motor there and ask for one like it its should be there fault they sold you the wrong motor . Id take it back.

Sorry to post this so late, my husband went back up to John Stone and they agreed to switch out the fan blade to a CCW blade to match the motor. This worked and we have a working AC now, although ever since it has been working, the fall weather has came in and we have not needed it :p BUT it is working!

This is a great site and thank you all for your suggestions and help!
