I have a stone fireplace in my living room that is so outdated! Does anyone have any suggestions on CHEAPLY updating? Paint? I am so over this fireplace the house was built in 78 and I have been working hard to update it this is my biggest struggle.. any suggestions would be much appreciated.

You can paint brick, but keep in mind that the paint will be all but impossible to remove in the future.

Natural stone is never outdated. Perhaps a new mantel and fireplace accessories would give it a face lift.

the cheapest thing would be to paint it, but then you've still got a stone fireplace - just a different color.

to really hide the stone, you can either tile it (if it's flat), or plaster over it. tile really isn't that expensive and is easier to do than you'd think. i recently saw on a show where they used liquid nails to adhere the tiles (to either brick or other tiles) & then used grout in the seams.

or you could make the whole thing smooth (very contemporary) or textured and plaster/mortar over it. then paint anyway you want.
