Hi,
I have read up quite a bit on cleaning and refinishing decks but I have some concerns on the fine points.
I have applied 2 treatments of the Super Deck wood cleaner. I followed this with pressure cleaning. Some areas still have a very thin film of spotty finish on the wood that appears lighter than the surrounding wood. I also see some drips where the finish was partially dissolved. I suppose the last finish may have been more of a medium solids content finish.
Of course I have to get rid of these drips but how hard should I work on the residual finish? I want to do this right because it's a terribly difficult and I dont want to do it again for as long possible. Is the cleaner I'm using a good product?
The boards vary tremendously in color. The vertical ones look great after pressure washing but any thing horizontal is still mostly black (this is redwood). I care more about preservation than appearance but will the brightener even this out a bit? The wood is still in good shape for the most part.
I was planning on spraying the finish myself but it may be a somewhat daunting task. The problem is that this "deck" has a roof with about 30 2x2's running across the top. Each one will have to sprayed from all 4 sides and of course much of the spray will come right back on me. To get the top side of the boards I may have climb on the top since they are spaced about 6" apart. Also I have never sprayed before. Is this a job for a pro?
Finally, the finish I have is the high grade Behr clear penetrating finish.I know that Behr products don't usually get top honors. One article I have from Fine Homebuilding recommends Clear Wood Finish UV from the Flood Co. Any recommendations on finish?
Thank a lot.
