Just bought a new home and the oven doesn't work. It's an electric Kenmore oven. The stovetop burners work, but the oven (bake, broil, clean) do not work. The indicator light does not come on either when you turn the oven on.
A friend suggested that it's probably the heating element for the oven. Any thoughts or suggestions? I really don't want to pay Sears $80 just to look at it.
Thanks very much.

Hello nigeledge and Welcome to the Do-It-Yourself Web Site.
Not likely the heating element. More likely to be the selector control and or thermostat which allows current to flow to the heating element. Replacing the heating element is still a good idea, even if it is not likely to solve the problem.
Testing the thermostat for continuity can be done. Be sure the electrical power is turned off first. May also check for continuity at the heating elements terminals when the thermostat is turned on. No continuity indicates no connection from the thermostat to the heating element. Same applies to the position selector switch, if there is one on that model.
Read the manufacturers online web site for additional product information, problem possibilities, solving methods, disassembly, reassembly methods, repair procedures, pictorials, schematics, downloadable repair and or owners manuals, which may be available online.
Retail appliance parts dealers can also help determine what the possible problem may be. Bring the make, model and serial numbers. Appliance part stores and parts dealers are listed in the phone book.

Check the owners manual. Quite often the problem is that the control is set up on the timing mode. Check the start and stop time selectors. This could be your problem
