Had an appointment today to have the flues cleaned. Here is my setup: Fireplace that gets used 20X in colder months, Natural gas hot water heater and natural gas furnace which is brand new and not been used once. I was told by the installer of the furnace that we should have the flues cleaned before we use the new furnace. We were using oil previously.
I got a call while the chimney pro was here and he told me that the flues are fine meaning there are no cracks. But he said that I needed to have a ss liner installed because of moisture he noticed in the flue. He attributed the moisture from the extreme temperatures due to my hot water heater. Keep in mind that I have not fired my new furnace up once this year. He quoted me $1200.00 which I feel is fair but in doing my due diligence I see that a new liner is usually needed due to decay or cracking. If moisture is present I would think that it's from the 3 inches of rain we had yesterday thanks to the remnants of hurricane Jeannie. So I am a little skeptical here. Especially after reading all over the web that this seems to happen quite frequently. Another thing that bothers me is that after I told the guy that I would need to think about it and we would get back to him he did not clean my flues . So I need some solid advice from the experienced here. It is starting to get chilly here and we would love to turn the heat on. Thanks so much.
