My blower motor is very noisy, makes a rumbling sound that you
can hear through the air ducts throughout the house.
There is also a hissing sound that can be heard through the return
vents.

I took the panel off and found cardboard/paper wrapped around
the blower motor. Looks like one of those things you attach to
the filter to make your house smell good. It must have come off
when I last replaced the filter.

After removing the piece of cardboard the rumbling/hissing is
still there.

I am guessing that the blower motor needs to be replaced?
How much does that cost? It is a Carrier unit in the attic,
used for cooling and heating, 7 years old.

Do you replace the whole thing, motor and wheel or just the
motor? Or can anything else be done to save it?

This is my first post here, I hope my description is decent.

Cost depends on whether or not it multi- or single-speed.

I have a Carrier heat pump that is also 7 years old with a mult-speed blower motor and it cost $500 for the part (from the HVAC company) and $120 for labor.

You can find the part online for about $400 with a replacement capacitor. Some here recommend replacing the capacitor at the same time esp. if the unit is already 7 years old.

If you have a single speed, it's only like $150 plus another $100-$150 for labor.

I live near DC so the labor and parts might be more/less expensive than where you are at.

If you purchase online, you have to make sure you have all the digits on the model of unit you have. Depending upon the 4 letters following the SN, it makes a difference in the part. I was reluctant to purchase mine online because if I got the wrong part, there would be a restocking fee; or if it was the company's error for sending me the wrong part, it would take more time to get a replacement out.

I just went ahead and had my servicing company do it. Sure, I could have saved $200, but I could have spent more too.

With the unit off check inside the blower wheel real good. Something small in there will throw it off balance and make all kinds of racket.
