View Full Version : Home freezer whine

Our faithful old freezer (Sears if it matters) has a new whine apparently from the compressor motor. It sounds like the bearing whine from an evaporator fan motor so I replaced it but the whine remains.

The whine is present all the time even when it appears that the commpressor motor is not circulating fluid. Is there another motor in there that I can't find? Is it possible that the relay somehow keeps the compressor motor running even when the thermostat is not calling for cooling?

I know that I should be buying a new freezer. I noticed water dripping out of the cabinet insulation when I shut the freezer. I am very curious as to what is going on.
It stopped whining right after I posted the above but I'm sure it was my warning.
Thanks

Hi,
The whine could be the evaporator fan motor inside the freezer, since you already replaced the condenser fan motor.

Sorry, Jake, I didn't make myself clear. I replaced the evaporator fan without adequately locating the sound. I wouldn't try replacing the compressor motor. For that I call the experts like you.
by-the-way doest that 72 in my sears pat no mean that it was made in 1972. Or is that too good of a reliability.
Thanks for reading and replying to my post

Hi,

Theres only the evap. motor, some had a condenser motor, but if yours dosent, then the only other thing it can be is the compressor. very expensive!
If they still even make it for your model#. I have run into some 70's models that quit making the compressors.

The serial# would have the date the freezer was made. :)

But it sounds like a 70's model.

Jake, one more contribution to my education, please , if you have the time.
I like Sears because they furnish parts lists and scematics but this one for my freezer is vague about the compressor since various different compressors are used. (The s/n indicates that it is a 1982 model.) I see no reference to a condensor motor.

It appears to me that what I think is the compressor motor runs all the time whether the thermostat is calling for cooling or not. It had the whine whether it was pumping coolant or not. Now the whine has stopped but I hear an occasional ticking sound. There is a relay attached to the motor frame but is there an internal solenoid to gate the coolant flow?

The freezer is still holding temperature but I am scared and will probably replace it at the next good sale.
Thanks to you and all the good guys who answer dumb questions for pluggers like me.
