Is a toiler normally placed to the left or right of the vanity. Currently, you open the door to the bathroom and right as you enter the toilet is to the left which is to the left of the vanity. The bathroom is being gutted and redone. The contractor, who does a lot of bathrooms, says he would recommend installing the vanity to the right of the vanity, adjacent to the outer wall of the bathroom.

In most installations I have seen, the toilet is between the vanity and the tub. Allows for a "little more" privacy. In my own home, the tub is on the left and the toilet is in a small alcove across from it and the vanity is across the rear wall.

As majakdragon suggested, placing it to the right of vanity would be better.
The issue I would have is the toilet usually is protruding out more than a vanity cabinet and as such your entry door would have to be adjusted to accommodate, if it was not placed there to begin with. It is more appealing not to enter a bathroom with toilet immediately to your left or right, however the door swings in full view.
In your case, extra money will be needed to relocate toilet. It may not be worth it but it would look better.

In mine, when you open the door(left to right) there is the toilet sitting right there, then the vanity, then the shower. my plans for the very near future(couple weeks) are to cut out a space for closet(currently in hall behind bathroom wall) so it's inside the bathroom, and move the door over about a foot, and change it to open right to left, thereby concealing the toilet behind the door, instead of right in your face. I have to move the door over so it wont hit the toilet.
