I'm interested in sharpening saw blades and other tools as a business. Can someone please tell me what I should be looking for in equipment. Should I get a piece of equipment that sharpens everything or should I get a different machine for every tool. If you can recommend a manufactorer that would be helpful too.
Thank You

Hello jp3. Welcome to our Do-It-Yourself Web Site and my Sharpening Shop forum topic.

As a vocational sharpener myself, I can tell you that there is no one machine that can sharpen everything. You will either need to specialize in certain tools & job out most other tools. Buy machinery as you build the business.

You will also need to study, practice and learn as you go. Some classroom training may be needed and or provided by the manufacturers of the sharpening machinery. Most are home study courses.

To locate sharpening schools and machinery sellers, buy and read the popular science and mechanics magazines. Advertisers for both machinery sales and training courses can be found in them.

Below is one of several basic companies offering both machinery and training. Doing an online search will find others.

Foley-Belsaw Company:

Sharpening Web Site:
http://belsaw.com/

As a note worthy reminder, sharpening tools is not always a profitable business venture nor high paying career. One must like working with machinery and like working in a machine shop environment.

Hello madmatt. Welcome to my Sharpening Shop forum topic.

This thread is rather old but the information is still good. The company listed is a good source of information and machinery for the casual sharpener, vocational and or business sharpener. Check out their web site.

Other sources can be found in popular sciences, popular mechanics magazines and others like them. These sources have advertisements and prepaid return postcards for additional information on learning the trades.

Best of my knowledge there is no single training course for any one tool sharpening. Most but not all machines sharpen a variety of tools.

What type of shears are you referring to exactly?

Power (gas or electric) hedge shears or hand held manual scissors type hedge shears? Kindly clarify. There are many types of shears.

If you only need shears sharpened, of any variety, may be best to have a local sharpening shop do the work. Kindly provide requested info so we can help you further.

If you need further assistance, use the reply button to add the additional information or ask additional questions.
