My wife and I just moved into a new apartment (actually it is a two-story townhouse/duplex). We didn't realize it when we were looking at the place, but our neighbors smoke and the smell appears to be coming into our apartment through our air conditioning ducts. The landlord says the neighbors have an air purifier which has worked in the past, and the neighbors say they are now only smoking outside - which I believe. However, the smell (and I assume second-hand smoke) is still periodically coming through our vents most especially when our air conditioning kicks on.
Both sides of the apartment have their own air conditioning unit, so I don't think we share any duct work. Thankfully the smell is not constant, but it is still often enough to be irritating.
Our landlord has suggested it might (key word being might) be that our two return air ducts (which he says share a wall with each other) are not sealed properly and ours could be sucking in air from next door, though he doesn't seem to be in a hurry to fix the problem. Since I know nothing about air conditioning systems, this sounds plausible to me, but I wanted to get some advice before continuing.
My wife and I have reached the desperation stage where we would consider just handling the matter ourselves if at all possible.
I would great appreciate any help on the matter.

Hard to say what to do here. But this is where Id start looking. How about the people there before did they smoke? Clean the AC coil in the unit there 50/50 water and clorox.Get a better pleated filter.
