I have noticed that when I turn my AC on, I will hear it try to start one or twice before it comes on. Sometimes it does not come on. When it does work, it is blowing cold air. Could this be a thermostat that I need to replace (the thermostat looks like it was installed in the 70's).

I don't know exactly what you are hearing that indicates that you think you A/C unit is trying to kick on, but you COULD have a bad motor start capacitor on either the blower motor inside the house, the condenser blower motor outside, or on the motor that turns the compressor. Any one of these components depend upon a good motor start capacitor to run. When a capacitor goes bad it could be causing any of these motors to NOT start sometimes. If you can be more specific about what you are hearing maybe it will be possible to zero in on just where to look for a possible solution to your problem. Remember, here on the internet, the only eyes & ears are yours. What isn't written here can't be used to troubleshoot a problem. Don't be afraid of too much detail. It's usually possble to sort out what's significant from what isn't so long as the observations are accurate.
