It looks like the previous owner of our home painted the steel entry door with either a satin or semi-gloss paint. It looks awful. We would like to paint it, but are confused about what the proper steps are. Should we kilz it first? What is the best finish and paint to use (indoor/outdoor)? We are also considering the faux wooden finish. Again, what should we do about painting over what is already there to get a fresh start?

Find out if the existing paint is oil or latex. Most likely latex. Clean the door with TSP/water, and scuff sand it. Wipe the door down to remove the dust. Prime the outside with a good quality exterior primer. Paint with either satin or semi gloss exterior latex trim paint. Same for the inside, except use interior products.
