I am trying to get my Modern Maid counter top gas appliance,Model #PGT193UB , back to snuff.

I did some reading at a repair place site and came up with the correct description of the parts i see as being a problem. One knob was hard to turn .I removed the 4 burner knobs and the fan knob and lifted out the black glass ? cover plate, unplugged the two wire leads from the part with the green center marked Mexico,9240,3 and lifted it out .I believe this is called the BURNER SWITCH.The center is green and it ,as opposed to the other 3, has a crack in it.The two wire leads i mentioned are part of the whole electrical series and there is a terminal on each side .That i can get replaced no problem.

Under it is what i understand to be the GAS VALVE and it is seized up.I determine this cuz it is REALLY stiff, and putting downward pressure and turning it as is normal,it turned under a LOT of pressure, but stripped the plastic guides off the knob.
I can see where i detach this valve from the rest of the assembly but i need to know the procedure from here. Before disconnecting the brass connector do i need to shut off the GAS MAIN or is their a more practical process to remove this gas valve so i can replace it?This valve has a bolt on the left side holding it in the frame and a brass coupling that is connected to what looks k\like a stainless or aluminum gas line.It also has two tiny screws on the top of it.
Any help would be appreciated,
Thank you,
Gerry

Hello: Gerry

Yes. The gas must be turned off prior to removing the gas valve. Should be a shut off in the gas supply line behine the stove. That isolation valve will allow you to tuen off the gas to the stove and not have to turn off the gas at the meter, providing the gas fuel is natural gas.

If the is not shut off behind the stove, the valve is usually on the supply pipe, than the gas has to be shut off at the meter or somewhere will it will not flow into the stove.

Once the gas is turned off, remove the burner assembly from the stoves gas valve. The valve than must be unscrewed out of the manifold pipe. Here the trick is to use a water pump pliers to gently grasp the valve and unscrew it from the manifold.

Once removed from the manifold pipe in the stove, take it to any local appiance parts store and buy the new replacement. Screw that one into the stoves gas manifold. May have to remove the orifice and install the orifice onto the new valve. The orifice is the brass or bronze hex nut (thimble looking) orifice.

The sparker switch also gets replaced. Can also be purchased at the local appliance parts store. Be sure to bring the old parts and the stoves brand, model and serial numbers to insure and getting the correct parts.
