I need a little advice. I helped a friend paint her bathroom last week and it did not turn out how she wanted it to. She thought she had picked out a light green (celedon, maybe). However once we started painting she realized that the color was too dark (more of a moss/pea soup green). We bought some buff colored glaze to try to lighten it up. We used the sponging technique to apply it-a little in the corner to start, but it's still not quite right. Now it looks like the walls are green with a dirty film over it. Oh, the walls have an orange peel texture too (which doesn't help). How can we make the color lighter without completely repainting? Can we mix the paint and the glaze together to lighten the paint? Any suggestions?

Don't mix the paint and glaze.

If you want to use a glaze, forget the buff color and go with a very light green glaze.

You could get a complimentary color and do some stenciling or put on some complimentary wall paper.

I painted my first bathroom 3 times before I got the color right. This is just the nature of the beast. I have followed Annettes advice of buying a quart and painting a large piece of posterboard which you can place the room so you can see it in natural lighting conditions etc. This might not work well if the walls are already painted a bright color of course but you could move the poster to a similar room that has white walls. The white walls will make the color appear somewhat brighter than it actually is.

Sounds like a lot of struggle for something simple. Cut your loses, go out and buy lighter paint, and paint it again.

yep!

but THIS time.....pick the color you like from the paint chips, but purchase the next lighter shade! you'll be glad you did!
