our house was built in 1940. the 1st floor shower floor leaks (heavy water to the garage ceiling below). when we bought the house, the inspector said it was the shower pan (not the drain pipe). I popped a couple of small tiles at the edge and see there isn't a pan - just original concrete(?) base below tile. I was hoping for good ideas/products that would help me waterproof/seal existing tiling without redoing the whole thing.

Tear out the whole project and replace. Most shower pan failures are due to improper installation of drain. You can do the old-style mud shower pan or you can go with the more modern prefab with pre-fab drain slope products. You need a wise and experineced installer Go with a licensed and insured contractor that priovides you with certificates that you can verify with the approprite agencies.
