If you are going to use a pre-fab shower pan, follow manufacturer's installation instructions. Shower pans are available in various forms, shapes and materials. Among these are fiberglass, hot-mopped asphalts, copper, lead, and even liquid-applied or sheet membranes. Membranes are popular because the material itself is cost effective and allows for a quicker installation, which also results in reduced labor costs. Prefabricated shower pans are often set in mortar to prevent movement or flexing. Preformed sloping devices will provide you with the required slope if using a membrane.

Avoid using green board. It is water resistant, but not waterproof. Use concrete underlayment board in shower area. Membrane should be turned up the walls a minimum of 3 inches higher than the shower curb, or 6 inches above the floor in showers without curves.

If you are wanting to do a mud shower pan, then a good tile book or online search will provide you with lots of info.
