i just replaced an old douglas-style ball with a universal flapper. when i flush now, as soon as the handle is released, the flapper closes and flushing stops. with the old douglas i replaced, i could hit the flush handle and the tank would empty completely. do i have to hold the handle until the tank empties with a flapper or should it stay up long enough by itself?

Adjust the chain so it "just" allows the flapper to seal.Shouldn't have any more problems. Good luck and post back if you still have problems.

Some of the new one's are for low water flush and you can turn the flapper for it to stay open more. Some flappers have a small hole in the side of them. Turn it so the small hole is on the down side .This way it will let the tank empty

i actually just called the manufacturer and they think, based on the age of the toilet (1954), that it needs a larger ball (with more bouyancy). they have a model like that and are sending one out to me (free of charge (good company - lavelle). thanks for all of the advice.
