ok...i'm installing an exhaust fan in a bathroom where a ceiling light was. here's the issue: there are 2 power supplies going to the fixture, each with a black and white wire...on the light i'm replacing, a black and a white were connected together, with the other black and white going to the black and white on the light. connecting the new exhause fan like this trips the breaker. how should this be done?

The original wiring is the standard way a switch loop is wired. Are you sure you duplicated the original wiring exactly? I.e., are you sure that the black and white wires which were connected to each other now are the same wires that were previously connected (the black from one cable and the white from the other cable)? You left this connection alone and did not connect anything else to it? Also, you didn't mess with the wiring at the switch?

If you answered "yes" to all of the above, then I would suspect you have an accidental short. Double-check your work. If it all checks out, the fan could be bad.
