Every hour or two, one of my toilets sounds like it's running, then stops abruptly after a couple of seconds with a thud. Because it happens intermittently, I have never been able to time it so that I can see what is going on at the time. It just started doing this a few days ago. Any ideas what could be causing this problem. If so, will it require a plumber or can I make the repair myself? Thanks.

The flapper is leaking, and needs to be replaced.
Clean the flapper seat with steel wool or SOS pad. Shorten the chain on the new flapper so that it just allows it to seal fully.
If the overflow pipe has little L-shaped brackets on the bottom, cut the rubber ring out of the new flapper and attach it by its rubber "ears". Works better that way.
Good Luck!
