Hello,
I have a question about painting in the kitchen and safety. I have two spaces in my little (tiny) kitchen that I want to paint. I have a typical small apt kitchen layout. Stove/fridge on one side, turn around and the counter and sink are opposite with about 3 feet between.

I want to paint the backsplash above my counters/sink - it's formica, and it's at least 40 years old. The other area I want to paint is a formica/laminate counter top that someone obviously added about 30 years ago. It's mounted but apparenlty permanently sealed to the wall with aLOT of paint.

My questions are these: If the surfaces need to be prepped with an oil base primer (i.e., Zinsser). How do I do this priming/painting safely with the stove so close? It's an ancient gas stove.

Also, how long between the last coat (1 primer - 1 coat acrylic + sealer) and when it's cured? Some articles I've read say to wait at least 72 hours before it's cured.

Am I being too paranoid about the stove being on while I paint in the kitchen? I don't remember observing others turning their ovens off when I've helped in the past.

If there is a safe alternative (cover the stove with foil? hahah - I did wonder about that one...) I will be grateful for all advice. I have no clue how to shut the stove off and turn the gas off. Will the utility company come to turn it off and then back on again?

Thanks VERY much in advance for your consideration and assistance - I've learned so much from this forum already - I'll appreaciate any and all advice. Thanks again ~

Use zinsser bullseye 123 it is water based. Problem solved. Clean ALL the grease off before you do anything. do a little sanding, do a little priming, wait 1 hour apply first top coat, wait 4 hrs apply second top coat. Second dat apply protective finish. Use melamine paint it is pretty tough but I doubt it will stand up to pots and pans for very long. Backsplash probably ok counter in a kitchen ?????

Hello,
Thanks so much for the response. Yes, the counter I want to paint is something a previous tentant installed. It's a simple board with Formica on the top which sits on shelf brackets (permanent to the wall due to the many coats of paint) right next to the stove.

It's a very small kitchen. I'm concerned because I've read "Flammable" on the cans, and the stove is on all the time because it's gas.

So, I can go ahead and paint without disconnecting the utility (gas) ?

Thanks very much for the response. I've looked everywhere I could think of, came across this site, and have spent hours gaining knowledge from all of you. Thanks!
