Hi everyone.
I am trying to install a suspended ceiling in my garage. I have already put up insulation and drywall on the walls. I have read how-to's on putting up one of these ceilings, but I am stuck on one part. On many instuctions it says that I need 3-4" clearance between the new ceiling and the old ceiling or joists.
I want to install the ceiling over my garage door opener so I can still use the garage if I ever need to again. Therefore, I only have about 1-2" on one wall between the joists and the highest point I could put the ceiling. I have no problem with space for the other 3 walls, it is just this one.
My question is, do I really need 3-4" space for just one side of the ceiling? Could I get away with having only about 1 1/2" between the ceiling and joist?

That clearances is required to remove the panels. However, if this is because of the mounting of the door operator, if you could give use some information about the door, hardware and how it functions, we may be able to present some adjustments or alternatives.
