Hi,
this my first post on this forum. I' ve recently bought 700 sqft of laminate that I plan to install myself (first time ever). I thought that laminate flooring was easy, but then I discovered this forum and all of a sudden it doesn' t look so easy anymore. I have hundreds of doubts now. Anyway, here are my first two questions (many more to come):
I bought a Shaw product called Perpetual at Home Depot ($2.79/sqft but there was a 20% off since it is a "special order"). Does anyone know this product? Is it junk or just an average laminate like hundreds out there?
Does laminate flooring add value to your house (I' ll do the whole second floor removing the existing carpet, the first floor has hardwood floors instead) or is perceived by a potential buyer as something that needs to be removed as an old carpet?
Thanks.

Don't know Shaw's line, so can't advise you there.
Laminate is considered by most to be disposable floor covering like carpet, so doesn't add $$ to your home's value like hardwood. That said, nice laminate will look better than worn carpeting any day of the week. Add that to the anti-allergy trend in flooring these days. It certainly won't reduce your home's value.
You remind me of myself last March when I started my 800 sq. ft. install. Yikes, I about worried myself to death about it. Believe it or not, it's really not so bad. Prep your subfloor appropriately, follow the directions, and take your time. You'll be fine. If a middle-aged woman with no DIY skills to speak of like me can do it, anyone can.

my husband and i (actually, mostly me!) put down TrafficMaster (i think Shaw makes it, too) from HD in our kitchen & dining room. i thought it was very easy and it looks fabulous. if you're nervous at all, buy the video, if there is one, showing the installation - or if the video is playing at the store, stand there & watch it! read your instruction book thoroughly - several times! also, buy the installation kit. and finally, read every question ever posted in this forum!!!! all kinds of quirky things will come up that won't be covered in your instruction booklet! and if you have any questions, just post them here & you'll get tons of help!
i think floating laminate floors are wonderful & a great DIY project!
good luck! :)
