Painting - Sikkens Finishes on Cedar Siding?

We are building a new house & have taken on the task of painting the interior & exterior to save some $$$.

We are using red cedar clapboards for the siding & were planning on using Sikkens Cetol 123 to finish it. It is an expensive product but we've heard that if properly applied provides the best protection again UV rays.

Our contractor is really trying to talk us out of using this saying he's 'heard that it fails' a lot. I've been searching on the web & can't find anyone saying that - all the info i've read so far has been extremely positive.

Does anyone out there have any experience with Sikkens? Is there another product someone would recommend? We would like to keep the natural look of the cedar & want something durable that will protect the wood from turning black.

Sorry for the delay in answering, but I've been out of town. my experience with sikkens is that its one of the best exterior stains I've ever used. Haven't used it a whole lot, but enough to know I like it. If the contractor bid the total job including materials, he might be shying away from using it because it is expensive, and he didn't spec the materials when providing a price.

Never used this stuff but when I was looking around I was very interested in it. Sikkens is good stuff though.

What issues did you have with the penofin product

Me? None really. Sikkens has more product variety and offers latex stains as well, I dont believe Penofin does. And for that small reason I would give Sikkens the overall edge. But I can't say its not a good product.
