I will be planting a couple of apple and cherry trees in the spring and have been looking at the varieties. That got me to thinking about an interesting topic for this forum.
BTW - I am in zone 5, close to zone 6. Considering braeburn and Sept. Fuji for the apple trees. Haven't made up my mind on the cherry yet.
1. What is your favorite apple for the home garden?
2. Favorite cherry?
3. What were your experiences, good and bad, with apple and/or cherry trees in the home garden.

When we decided to plant a home Ochard it struck us as now possible to grow all those the Antique Trees. We have Fugi but also Chanago Strawberry Apple tree what an aroma. Out of 31 Semi Dwarfs 3 came on the scene in the 50s & 60s.
The rest are centuries old & taste & smell like nothing I have ever enjoyed before. One Asian Pear had over 100 pears last year that lasted in a fridge until March. This year we got 5 great big pears it seems this variaty is bi-annual by nature.
We got all our Trees, brambles etc from Trees Of Antiquity the new owners were trained by the origanal Nurserymen & Nurserywomen who travled around finding the old Familys who saved these old tasty Fruit trees for us to grow today.
One last thought, I live in what was once the Apple growing meca of Western NC until the Fire Blight hit 80 percent of the Apple crop, & became immunue to the streptomycin antibiotic.
My take is a lot of the old fruit trees have some resistance to these Blights or they would not be around today. It's the new fancy Hybrids that have an 80 percent die off so far. Fire Blight is always fatal.
Some of the Apple Farmers are looking inro Wine Grapes, it seems there is a 10 year deficit in Wine Grapes World wide.
