I'm doing a remodel that involves removing some walls. I'm trying to find hardwood, for the newly opened areas, that matches the exsisting hardwood part of the floor but if I can't find a good match I may have to install vinyl over the whole area. If it comes to that can anyone tell me the best way to install an underlayment over the old hardwood in such a way as to minimize damaging it? I'd like to do the least possible damage to the old hardwood just in case I find a match for it down the road.
Thanks!

It would be a pity to cover hardwood with vinyl. If that's your choice, then go with a perimeter install. They make special vinyls where you just glue the perimeter. You will never find a hardwood that will be an exact match to an existing floor. Go with the same species and pick a stain that comes close to matching the existing floor. Or, refinish the old floor to match the new.

Hey! I really feel the same....it would be a shame to cover it up with vinyl even though the new area will be a bathroom so, I'm looking at other options. This floor is around a hundred years old and it needs refinishing so I'd think that staining new boards to match wouldn't be a big problem if I could just find some that are close in size and grain. I'm still looking!
My main concern is how best to fasten down luan for the vinyl to go on if it comes to that. Need a solid surface but I don't want to put any glue on the hardwood and I'm unsure if screwing or nailing would do less damage. Any ideas?

Secure luan to the floor with staples using pneumatic stapler. Place staples about every six inches along the edge and eight inches in the center. Sand any high or rough places. Patch seams with floor patch. Sand smooth if necessary.
