Good Morning :)
 I have a question I hope can be answered. We recently purchased a home with a gas fireplace in the basement. It has a beautiful white finish with logs and I am looking forward to displaying pictures on the mantel. The dilemma is that the pipe leading outside sticks out the middle of the mantel and curves upward to an ugly metal plate and the gas supply line lead to the outside wall. Can this be enclosed with a fire-retardant material to make the fireplace look more 'finished'?
Thank you in advance for any help with this. :)

It should be able to be so enclosed. If the exhaust line is installed in such an awkward fashion, I would wonder if it is installed correctly. If you could post a photograph, it might help. In any event, it might be worthwhile to have a plumber look at this to be sure it is correct before enclosing it.
Hope this helps.

Hi Chris:
Thanks for your reply. I do not have a photo on hand but I looked on the net and came up with something similar to the gas fireplace we have. If you copy and paste the URL below you will see photos of some fireplaces.
Now if you can picture the fireplace with an exhaust flue coming out through the middle of the mantle, curving towards the wall and the gas line beside it going through the ceiling.
If the link below doesn't work, I'll try and get a picture of our fireplace and send it to you.
Thanks. :)
