I'd like to install some recessed low-voltage "can" lights in my bedroom. I've looked at some of the fittings available, and they all appear to be designed to fit between two joists.

Is it possible to get lighting that just sits in the drywall or is that not allowed?

Is there a good value place to get these types of lights from?

Thanks,

Antun

I'm unclear about your question. There is no place to install it other than between two joists. Is there some reason that the remodel cans won't work for you?

In general, the drywall should be able to support the can, but why not use the fixture as it is designed? It only takes a minute more to use the bracket.

Thanks for your reply.

Installing it between joists means tearing down the drywall on the ceiling to expose them. I was hoping there might be a can-only approach that would mean not having to remove all the drywall; sort of like when you install a light switch using a remodeling box.

I was just checking if there was an easier way to install them, but I guess the drywall is going to have to come down.

Not sure exactly what brand and models you are looking at, but most manufacturers offer "remodel" cans that install from below with no extra drywall damage.

I did a quick search online and found this:

... I'm pretty sure that's what you're talking about. If it is, then I presume I can get a 4.5" hole saw and then squeeze the entire unit through that, right?
