In my new house the builder spec for the fire detectors is kidde 1276. Any thoughts on this detector? Would you think it's a waste of money to yank them all out & replace with dual (ionization & photocell) models?

How about only replacing those in the bedrooms? Do you know if there are any interconnectability issues if I only replace some of them, or are they supposed to all be the same detectors on the interconnected circuit?

Thanks!
Randy

If these are typical 120v with battery backup residential smokes, the interconnect should work fine. I've mixed brands before, without incident.

So long as they are working well, and not hatching a slew of false alarms, the Kidde detectors are fine. The main advantage of the dual detectors is that they have a higher resistance to false trips, and the (theoretical) ability to pick up on certain types of fire on a different trigger level.

In practice, the differential is pretty small for the types of fires most likely in a residence.
