Some years ago a fellow gardner gave us a "potato" and said it was from
what she called a Heart Vine. We planted it and it grew quite well- a fast
growing, twining vine with medium green heart-shaped leaves. It produced a
number of "potatoes", beginning as a very small "wart" and growing
anywhere from golf ball to ladies' fist size, brown color and covered
with "dimples". We have never observed a flower. An attractive vine none
the less, we plant some potatoes and have passed many on to friends- qwhich
they in turn have done. The vine is usually killed back by the first frost,
but the potato will often survive and regenerate in the spring. I've
searched the webb extensively, but have not found anything close. Can you
identify. If you like I will send you a potato later in the Fall.

I believe you have ( Dioscorea Villosa ) it's sometimes called the Heart vine it is also called the Wild Yam. Check out this link & do some searches yourself for more & maybe some Pictures.

We have never eaten the tubers but if you cut 50 pieces & toss them you will get 50 more vines it's tough to kill. For now you have a name ( Dioscorea villosa ) to do some in depth searching use www.google.com .
I hope that's it's the plant it is very beautiful useful also, & grows real well in most soils.
