I have a MTD LT 12.5.38 Lawn Tractor with a Briggs & Stratten model 289707 engine.. I have a rather large problem with fuel system.. I attempt to start the mower, and fuel blows out the top of the carb, the tractor will start if the fuel tank is empty, but will not run smoothly.. If fuel is added to the tank, it leaks out the exhaust (while not running) and the tractor will not start.
any ideas? should I shoot the thing now? :(

My first action would be to check out the float in the carb. If it is sticking then fuel will constantly flow into the motor and as you say, it will come out of the exhaust. Also check your oil because with that amount of fuel going through, it (most likely) will also be leaking into the crankcase. So change the oil too.
