Walls and Ceilings - Hole In Plasterboard Wall!

Hi All,

I was assembling a bed my room and I managed to punch a hole in the plasterboard wall with a metal section from my bed, the hole is about 4 x 3 inches, im pretty bad with DIY as you can see! :D Can anyone help me out on how to fix this hole?

Cut the hole out so it is square. Find a piece of wood for backing. A 2x4 about 8 inches long should do. Slide the wood into the hole and screw it in place. To do this you put an 1 1/4 drywall screw through the wall into the wood. a trick is to put a screw in the middle of the wood so you can hold it tight. Make sure your wood backing is nice and secure. Next cut a piece of drywall to fit the hole. Screw it in place. One screw will do. Then get some quick set mud. Mix up enough to cover the area. Cover the entire area with mud. Then apply tape to seams between patch and wall. Mash down the tape. When this is set up you can use a 10 inch drywall knife and put three coats of mud on and around the patch feathering out until flat. Sand smooth. Paint.

Coops is exactly right. One other trick that I think speeds up the process is to cut the new piece of drywall and then make the hole fit the patch rather than the patch to fit the hole.
