I thought I would share a little money saving tip with everybody.

I'm in the process of finishing the decking on my deck, and I needed to purchase 1/2" carriage bolts to put the posts up. I had purchased a handful of these bolts at the local hardware store when I was putting up the main beam, to the tune of $1.80 a piece. For whatever reason, I never thought to look into purchasing these online. Well, after looking, I found a great supplier in Rhode Island who had the same bolts at $0.75 a piece, with free shipping and no tax. I ordered them and saved myself quite a bit. I've purchased things before online, but never have a seen such a price differential between local suppliers and mail order, so I thought I would share.

The only thing I can think is that the bolts are galvanized vice hot-dipped galvanized, which is what the new ACQ pressure treated lumber requires (see ACQ Fasteners (http://www.treatedwood.com/fastener.pdf)).

There are many other references, and many who are confused (I may be one), but check it out lest your deck suffers and you have to replace fasteners later.

I'm currently building a deck and have had many reputable sources deliver the wrong material and give me conflicting information.
