My husband and I just purchased home w/gas fireplace. Love the fireplace, hate the surround and hearth, which are emerald green stone slab (faux marble). Not planning on staying in house more than a few years, so don't want to spend $ on stone mason to come in and tear it all out. Is it possible to paint over it, perhaps apply a faux finish? Any suggestions greatly appreciated!

There are many conflicts here about painting over stone. Once the stone is painted it's very difficult to go back if needed.
But yes, you can paint it any way that you like. Firstly, it should be cleaned and free from any dust. It then needs to be sealed and primed before you put on your color of choice.
I would go with latex rather than an oil as heat from the gas fire could blister an oil coating.

Thank you so much for your response. Any idea what kind of sealer I should use?

A good quality primer will do nicely. Just ask at your dealers.
