Hello,
I have a gas fireplace in our condo that has worked very well for quite sometime, though recently a problem we've had is that when you turn the gas on to light the pilot and depress the spark ignitor button (which is electric) it will spark maybe once. The pilot sometimes doesn't light on the first spark, so I would wait a few seconds, and depress the spark ignitor again. On any attempt to use the spark ignitor after the first try it would not spark. The only way to try again would be to turn off the gas and wait several hours before trying again, sometimes days.

I've been searching online and cannot find a resource for replacement spark ignitors. I am nearly 100% sure this is the issue because in the past if I could get the spark to fly it would light the fireplace no problem. I can hear the gas, I know that's working. Would my local DIY warehouse have a replacement? Would I have to contact the fireplace manufacturer? TIA

Hello Skorpyo and Welcome to the Do It Yourself Web Site and my Gas Appliances topic.

The sparker is defective and would need replacement. This is a do it yourself project. Parts are available at local fireplace and patio furniture stores and or local appliance parts stores. Bring the make, model and serial numbers. Dealers and appliances parts stores are listed in the phone book.

Personally, I would use a match or hand held lighter and light that pilot each time as needed. When the pilot generator wears out and needs replacement, replace both parts at the same time.

The pilot generator can be identified as having two wire leads extending from the element end which is in the pilot assembly. This part wears out also and will need replacment in do time. Deal with both items (sparker & pilot generator) when the time comes.

Well, I finally removed the sparker and as I did so I saw a kink in the wiring running from the sparker to the place of ignition. I cut the wire back to remove the kink, re-capped the wire and hooked the sparker back up. The installer was kind enough to have left well over 2 feet of extra wire below and now the sparker is firing everytime!

I'm not sure how the wire became kinked, though the sparker itself was a little loose and may have pinched the wire against the lines below. Thanks for the advice and for this forum.
