Hi, everyone, I'm new to the boards, so go easy on me!

Question: I just purchased an old home (blt. in 1900) that has tons of character, but needs a LOT of renovating. One of things I just found out is that there is an unblocked, working fireplace that was walled in about 35 years ago. Does anyone have any suggestions about where to begin with the uncovery process? Naturally, I'm a little skittish about ripping out a wall, but wow - a fireplace in a room that already has high ceilings, hardwoods and French doors is soooooo tempting. Help!

Seek the advice of a period preservationist in your area.

I understand your hesitance to do anything. I just bought a 140 year old gothic victorian and have 3 marble fireplaces and 2 so far I found behind walls. Another one in the kitchen I have yet to uncover... These can be treasures ... approach em like anything else a house that old... CAREFULLY... locals preservationists and renovation folks offer lots of advise... Locally I have 2 informal groups that get together on monthly to talk about our challenges and have recruited lots of amatuer and professional help.

Do you know if the chimney's are clear? That one I left up to a contractor... your not gonna get me up on that steep roof. ! :o I have 4 of them... with potential of 6 fireplaces! YIKES....

There are lots of websites for help...

Good luck ...

Were you planning to actually use the fireplace? Even if it's in good shape, it's probably not deep enough to meet today's code.
