i have a kohler 7hp which is going on my go-kart. and everytime i let go of the throttle from high speed it backfires like a motherhumper. One time it backfired three times straight. It shoots flames out 5 inches long. why is it doing this? Is it bad for the engine causing lost horsepower? Its an old engine 28 years. can i fix it?

I don't think you'll be able to get rid of this effect. That carb isn't really designed for rapid decell, but you might be able to adjust the mixture and fine tune the points setting to reduce the problem.
