I am redecorating our master bedroom, which has laminate wood flooring with a light colored finish. The floor is in great condition, but we would like a darker finish. This floor was probably put down between 10 and 15 years ago; it is tongue and groove plywood, about 1.2" thick, and the top wood lamination is about 1/8" thick. It is either nailed or glued to the subfloor (I can't tell, as I can only see one edge where I removed a bathroom vanity cabinet). Is it possible to refinish this floor? If so, what preparation techniques will work, and what kind of stain/varnish should I use?

10-15 years old?

Hmmmn, if it has a bevel it will be more work unless the bevel can be completely sanded out without breaking through the top veneer layer...NOT a DIY job. In order to stain, the existing finish has to be completely removed and that would include hand scraping the bevels clean.

The floor has no bevels - the planks are completely flush and flat. Do you think that a good professional can sand this floor without going through the top lamination?
